How Often Should You Clean Your Diamond Earrings?

To keep your earrings looking their best, we recommend cleaning them weekly using the steps below. This prevents dirt and oil buildup. We also encourage you to have your earrings cleaned by professional jewelers every six months or so.

Step One: Put Your Earrings in Warm Water

Fill a small bowl with warm water and place it on a flat surface. To avoid losing your earrings down the drain in the event of a spill, don’t put the bowl in your sink! Instead, choose a smooth surface in an area where you’re unlikely to be disturbed. If you must use your sink, make sure the drain is completely plugged. Carefully put the earrings in the bowl. We suggest not crowding the bowl with multiple jewelry pieces, especially since diamonds can scratch gold.

Step Two: Add a Few Drops of Soap

Add a few drops of gentle liquid dish soap. Avoid products containing fragrances and/or dyes as such additives could damage your earrings. Carefully mix the solution, moving the earrings around in the process. This should loosen and remove surface dirt.

Step Three: Give Your Earrings Time to Soak

Leave the earrings in the solution for at least 30 minutes. If they’re overdue for a good cleaning, you can leave them in a bit longer. Just remember to keep an eye on them. Gently move them around in the water every so often to help loosen debris.

Step Four: Gently Remove Any Remaining Dirt

When your earrings are done soaking, they could still have some dirt stuck in the settings and other tiny crevices. Use a soft children’s toothbrush to remove any debris, taking care to avoid scrubbing with too much force.

Step Five: Rinse and Dry

Fill another shallow bowl with warm water and use it to rinse your earrings. This is much safer than rinsing under running water. You may need to empty and refill the bowl a few times to make sure all of the soap is gone. After the soap is washed off, pat your jewelry dry with a soft microfiber cloth. Use a new cloth made specifically for jewelry to eliminate the possibility of transferring dust or chemicals to your earrings.
